Agriculture feeds Malaysia and employs millions, yet much of the sector still runs on smallholdings, ageing farmers and weather that climate change is making less predictable. The Sawah & Smallholders lab treats AI as a tool for food security and farmer livelihoods, not just yield charts on a dashboard.

Keeping Malaysian language and culture sovereign in the AI age

Most large language models are trained overwhelmingly on English and a handful of dominant languages. Bahasa Malaysia, the country's regional languages, Manglish, dialects and the cultures they carry risk being flattened or misrepresented by AI built elsewhere. The Bahasa, Budaya & AI lab is about cultural sovereignty: ensuring Malaysia's identity is built into the intelligence of the future, not erased by it.

Malaysia's roads carry one of the higher road-fatality burdens in the region, and its cities lose enormous time and fuel to congestion. The Bandar Pintar lab applies AI to mobility and smart cities, making movement safer, cleaner and smoother for the rakyat who commute every day.

Micro, small and medium enterprises make up around 97% of Malaysian businesses and employ nearly half the workforce, yet they are the least equipped to adopt AI. The Pasar & MSME lab is about closing that gap, so that the warung owner, the family manufacturer and the growing startup can all compete in an AI economy.

Malaysia's future competitiveness depends on the talent it educates today. The Sekolah Masa Depan lab applies AI to education, not to replace teachers, but to support them and personalise learning for every student, from a well-resourced urban school to a rural classroom with limited connectivity.

Government touches every Malaysian's life, from renewing a licence to accessing benefits, yet public services can be slow, fragmented and frustrating. The GovTech Rakyat lab applies AI to make government faster, fairer and more transparent, with the citizen rather than the bureaucracy at the centre.

Malaysia is one of the world's most important semiconductor nations, a top-ten exporter of chips and home to roughly 13% of global assembly, testing and packaging capacity, anchored in Penang's decades-deep electronics ecosystem. The Kilang & Cip lab asks how AI can lift this backbone up the value chain: from assembling the world's chips to designing them, and from labour-intensive production lines to intelligent, resilient factories.
